Blue sky view Discovery Tour pontoon raft moving Colorado River Canyon, downstream from Glen Canyon Dam, Page, Arizona, USA

Colorado River Discovery Tours begin with a ride down the 2-mile long Glen Canyon access tunnel. With the dam soaring above, tourists board motorised pontoon rafts for a guided tour from the Glen Canyon Dam to Lee's Ferry, some 15 miles downstream from the location here. The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch dam on the Colorado River in Northern Arizona, near the town of Page. It was built to provide hydro-electric power and flow regulation from the Upper Colorado to the lower basin of the river, supplying water to the lower basin during years of drought. Its reservoir, called Lake Powell, extends upstream into Utah, and is the second largest artificial lake in the There are concerns that the dam has adverse effects on the the Colorado River downstream. Before the dam, the spring discharge of the Colorado reached 2,500 cubic metres per second, but is now limited to a discharge of 990 cubic metres per second; so, it is feared, the river no longer has the capacity to remove rock-slides from the steep canyon walls, leading to the build-up of dangerous rapids for both tour boats and fish. The reduced discharge also encourages an overgrowth of vegetation along the banks. The upstream dam is also accused of raising downstream river temperatures, to the detriment of fish.
