Pheromone trap. Insect trap baited with pheromones in an orchard. Insect pheromones are odours produced by insects to attract each other for reproduction. The pheromones being used here are from the Codling moth (Carpocapsa pomonella), an important pest of apple and pear orchards. Traps baited with artificial pheromones are used to control insect pests. The traps act as early warning systems, allowing the detection of adult insect emergence and the monitoring of pest populations. This enables insecticide to be sprayed only when and where it is needed.
