His father had by this timeentered into some speculations, and for a shorttime was thought to be a wealthy man. But hesoon failed, and the son found himself in greatpecuniary straits. He sent a letter to LucienBonaparte, the brother of Napoleon, then FirstConsul, enclosing a couple of short poems. Lu-cien presented to the young poet his own pensionof 1,000 francs as member of the French , moreover, earned something by his pen;and at the age of twenty-nine he was appointed toan office with a salary of $200, which was beforelong increased to $400.
