Two of its citizens, Addison 0. \Yhitney and Luther , belonging to the Lowell City Guards, were killed in the affrayat Baltimore, April 19, 1861; and to their memory a handsomemarble monument has been erected on Monument Square. It wasdedicated June 17, 1865 ; and the lines inscribed upon the monu-ment were selected from Miltons Samson Agonistes by Gov. JohnA. Andrew, who gave the oration. The assessed area is 15,969 acres, including5,637 acres of woodland.
