The end of the pipeis 100 ft. from the foot valve, and was extended this dis-tance to get into good clear water. The pipes were sup-ported to the side of a pier with bolts. To keep sticks andsuch matter from getting into the pipes an extra piece 3 with a cap was screwed on the end and perforatedwith yi-in. holes. The horizontal pipe from the foot valvesto the end was set 2 ft. below the average level of the laketo insure getting water when the lake at this point becamelow, as is frequently the case during northwest winds. Toget the pipe down to this depth it was necessary to dig achannel for about 75 ft. under water, as the water is veryshallow near the shore. This work was done in the winter by using a scoop. .SWITCHBOARD DIAGRAM SHOWING ALSO WIRING OF SUB-STATION scraper with long handles made of 13^-in. pipe and pulledby a team of horses, which were hitched to the scraper bya long rope. The men holding the scraper walked on theice, which was then nearly a foot thick on the lake. Thefoot valve was kept down at the same depth as this pipe, thus insuring its always being under water. A manholewas built around the foot valve, from which the water canbe pumped should any repairs here be required. The two condensers feed into a common hot well, theoverflow from which discharges into a 14-in. pipe backto the lake. In the boiler room there are four Canada Foundry Com-pany water-tube boilers rated at 360 hp each, and thereis room for two more. These boilers are the same type as the Atlas boilers and are manufactured exclusively inCanada by the Canada Foundry Company. There are twoCochrane heaters supplied by a lo-in. x 6-in. x lo-in. Blakeduplex pump from the hot well
