A card index was made up of the places of residenceof the employees, showing whether they came by trolley,jitney or private conveyance, or walked to and fromwork. Each rider was assigned to his proper car by theproper routing. The loop at the works, which was oftwo tracks separated by ordinary spacing, was spread. In the meantime a new rescheduling and reroutingof lines had been effected in Quincy to improve the rush-hour conditions. A new through double-track routefrom Neponset Bridge had been opened, and a specialdepot car service had been established between the plantand the New Haven Railroad station at Quincy. Split-Shift Plan of Operation HadTO Be Advanced Unfortunately the split-shift plan was strenuouslyobjected to by the employees, who deplored the loss ofthe daylight hour in the evening, when they wishedto work in their war gardens. The men, too, weredissatisfied because they believed that the difficulty couldbe met in some other way. On two occasions a strikewas narrowly averted from this cause. The shipbuildingmanagement, moreover, held that the plan caused lossof efficiency through one
