Put-nam the Brave, with illustrations by AlfredFredricks, came out in a popular boys series (1869),and The Book of the East, containing much ofhis best poetry, in 1867. After leaving the customhouse, Mr. Stoddard became confidential clerk toGen. Geo. B. McClellan, which position he held forthree years. During this period he revised RufusW. Griswolds Poets and Poetry of America, en-larging it with a supplement, and bringing it downto date (1873). During the year 1874 he held theoffice of city librarian of New York. The amountof his critical work has been large, and his editoriallabors far-reaching. Besides the works mentionedhe has edited: The Last Political Writings of Lyon (1861); John Guy VassarsTwenty-One Years Around the World (1863); Melodies and Madrigals, Mostly from the OldEnglish Poets (1865), and a number of annuals,monographs, prefaces, and translations.
