One or twosmall species ofPhasmidcE (ab-out three incheslong) are foundin Europe onthe shores of theMediterranean,but the tropicalspecies are fatmore remark-able. As a re- Ceraocrana we have figured Ceraocrana papitatia,which is found in New Guinea.« It has very shorttegmina, but the wings are of enormous size. Thelegs are long, slender and strongly dntaact. Fhylliuin siccifolinm is a green insect, commonin the East Indies, which is remarkable for itsresemblance to a leaf. The wings are not so longas the abdomen. Several species of these WalkingLeaves are found in Asia and Africa. Gryllidae. In the Crickets, the head is largeand vertical, without ocelli, the hind legs are long and. thick, and the tegmina are shorter than the wings. Themale chirps by rubbing the tegmina together. Fig. f. Gryllns donusticiis, the House Cricket,is common in many houses, generally seeking shelternear the hearth, and only coming out at night. Itis of a dull yellow colour. Fig. g. Grylliis campcstris, the Field Cricket,is much larger and darker coloured than the lastspecies. It makes burrows in dry grassy places, andis very active, it is very scarce in England. Fio. e.
