Picture dated December 15th shows nurses on the picket line at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge this morning (Thurs) as nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland begin the first of two day-long strikes over pay. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is demanding a 19 per cent pay rise in the biggest ever walkout by NHS nurses. They say it is tough to attract and retain nurses with below inflation pay rises, but the government has said the pay demand is unaffordable. The strikes are taking place from 9am to 8pm today and on December 20. Staff will continue to provide “life preserving” care, such as children’s accident and emergency and chemotherapy, but routine services, such as hip replacements, will be disrupted.
