In 1583 Sir Humph-rey Gil-bert, a brave and gallant gentleman, with afleet of five ships and a company of two hundred and sixty men, left settled near the mouth of the St. Johns River, in New Found-land, andattempted to form a colony. But discouraged at the failure to find wealth manyof Sir Humph-reys men deserted, and some of them conspired to seize the ves-sels. Finally, Sir Humph-rey was obliged to return to Eng-land, but on his•w&y the vessel foundered and all on board were drowned. :1. AN IN-DIAN CAMP
