The evil genius of the military arm of Britain had been Howeand the evil genius of the naval arm was, in this case, the incapableAdmiral Graves. The former had allowed Washington to slip fromhis grasp at Valley Forge; the latter allowed the French fleet to slipn and take Cornwallis in the rear at Yorktown. On the 17th ofOctober, 1781, after fighting against impossible numbers for twoweeks, he was obliged to surrender. This practically ended the war.
