An old Victorian engraving of a table saw with a Britannia dove-tailing device. It is from a book of 1890. In 1890 the first ever dovetailing machine was patented by the Britannia Company, Colchester, Essex, England, UK in 1890. The dovetailing jig or frame is used to make shallow, angled cuts in conjunction with a foot-powered saw – here it is being pedalled by the woodworker. A dovetail joint (or simply dovetail) is a joinery technique most commonly used in woodworking joinery/carpentry, mainly in furniture.

As it has great resistance to being pulled apart (tensile strength), the dovetail joint is most commonly used to join the sides of a drawer to its front. A Knapp joint does a similar job.
