Some interestingevidence as to the opinion of teachers on thispoint has recently come before me. SCHOOL LIFE. 45 impossible to get with the slanting method anatural pose of the body unless the paper weretwisted, and then the lines of writing had to belooked at obliquely, and that he had thereforeabandoned it, and for the last eighteen months hehad employed in his school the Civil Service style,which, he said, was as near upright as possiblewithout being so, and was free from all kinds ofelaborate turnings and twists. The results weremost gratifying. He said, I have no hesitation ,in saying that I have now far less trouble to getan upright position of body, and that the habitof turning the head on one side and lookingat the writing obliquely has practically instance came about in this way. Ienquired of an assistant elementary teacher ifupright writing was used in her school, andshe answered that since a new head mistress hadbeen appointed, a couple of years before, it hadbeen introduced, and the altered position of thegirls at their writin
