John Brown (1800-1859), American abolitionist who advocated the use of armed insurrection to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States, from an 1846 or 1847 daguerreotype by African-American photographer Augustus Washington which was later reprinted as a cabinet card by Levin C. Handy.
