Valle Maira. Castle of Cartignano.


In 1340 the Marquis of Saluzzo Tomaso II detached the villages of Cartignano and Zoardo from the territory of Dronero, giving them to Giacomo Berardi of San Damiano. The Castle is mentioned for the first time, according to known documentation, only on 9 December 1477, when Guglielmo Il Berardi of San Damiano and Costanzone, received the oath of allegiance of the men of Cartignano and Zoardo inside the castle itself. It would follow that the building was built between 1453 and 1477 and the commissioners of the works should be Gaspare and Guglielmo II. The Castle would therefore seem to date back to the fifth or sixth decade of the fifteenth century, though not it can be excluded that some parts, perhaps older, are the result of more :
