This Department was formally established December 12, years previously, however, the Board of Trustees of the Insti-tution authorized the construction of a laboratory at Tucson, for thespecial needs of botanical research in desert areas. This laboratorywas completed during the year 1903, in accordance with plans drawnup by Mr. F. V. Coville and Dr. D. T. MacDougal, who served as anadvisory committee on the conduct of work at the laboratory untilthe present organization was effected. At Tucson the Department has the following buildings: Mainlaboratory, phyto-chemical laboratory, office, shop, and three waterreservoirs.
