This public comfort station was builtin December, 1904, by the Markets, Jail and Police Committee, of the City Coun-cil, at a cost of $6,457. Its erection wasthe outcome of an agitation on the partof the Board of Health to compel thecity to do away with an old frame build-ing situated in the same locality andused for a similar purpose on the Public Lavatory on the Mark ct Square at 1 I PLUMBER AND STEAMFITTER March 1, 1909 grounds that it was a menace to old building, although floored withcement was so soggy that at reeked withthe vilest odors and was an took a long time to stir the Councilinto action, because the City Fatherslooked upon such a place as somethingthat was not to be flaunted to publicnotice by the erection of a good-sizedand handsomely fitted up building, andwhen the comfort station was erected itwas unfortunately placed where it wouldbe the least noticed. The building is situated on the mar-ket place between two streets, and isaccessible from the market. Efforts tohave it placed parallel with the side-walk on York Street, one of the principalthoroughfares in the city, and a fewrods from the City Hall, met with thecondemnation of the aldermen and cityofficials, while an offer to compromiseby erecting it on the other side of themarket on Merrick Street, met with asi
