This public comfort station was builtin December, 1904, by the Markets, Jail and Police Committee, of the City Coun-cil, at a cost of $6,457. Its erection wasthe outcome of an agitation on the partof the Board of Health to compel thecity to do away with an old frame build-ing situated in the same locality andused for a similar purpose on the Public Lavatory on the Mark ct Square at 1 I PLUMBER AND STEAMFITTER March 1, 1909 grounds that it was a menace to old building, although floored withcement was so soggy that at reeked withthe vilest odors and was an took a long time to stir the Councilinto action, because the City Fatherslooked upon such a place as somethingthat was not to be flaunted to publicnotice by the erection of a good-sizedand handsomely fitted up building, andwhen the comfort station was erected itwas unfortunately placed where it wouldbe the least noticed. The building is situated on the mar-ket place between two streets, and isaccessible from the market.
