Organizing the WestGulf blockading squadron, on his arrivalin the Gulf of Mexico, by boldness andskill, with admirable assistants, he wentup to New Orleans triumphantly. Heoperated with great vigor on the Missis-sippi River, afterwards, between NewOrleans and Vicksburg; and on July 16,1662, was placed first on the list of pro-posed admirals. In 1863 he co-operatedin the capture of Port Hudson, and inAugust, 1864, defeated the Confederateforces in Mobile Bay.
