View NE of Coquet Island lighthouse (1841) & RSPB reserve, Northumbria, from the dunes S of Amble with bloody crane's-bill in foreground. St Cuthbert & Elfleda abbess of Whitby used to meet here in the C7th. St Henry the Dane lived here as a hermit & died on the island in 1127: his body was removed to Tynemouth Priory. The lighthouse was built 1841 on top of an early C15th light tower on the site of the Benedictine monastery dependent on Tynemouth. During the Civil war Coquet was occupied by a Royalist garrison of 200 men & surrendered to the Scots in 1643. Bird reserve of c 16 acres established in 1970. Boat trips go around the island but no landing is allowed.
