In Sept.,1776, after the evacuation of New York, Gen. Washington, wishing to ascertain the nu-merical strength and contemplated operations of the enemy, applied to Col. Knowlton toselect an individual to enter the British camp as a spy. Capt. Hale undertook the danger-ous office, and obtained the desired information; and was just stepping into his boat to re-turn, when he was seized as a spy, and brought before the British commander; who, withoutany investigation, ordered him to be hanged the next morning, which was <!one accordingly,Sept. 22, 1776. A twin-brother of the hero-spy, was Rev. Enoch Hale, Y. C, 1773; ordained pastor,Westhampton. Mass., Sept. 29, 1779; d. Jan. 14, 1837, a. 83. He left three sons, Nathan,grad. Wms. Coll., 1804, many 3ears Editor of Boston Daily Advertiser; Enoch, M. D., atH. C, 1813, practising physician in Boston, deceased; and Richard of -frrvro a ~ AlfalToxica.
