View, towards the colonial Cabildo, of people and Falklands/Malvinas War protest banners, west end Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires

The Plaza de Mayo is the scene of 350 former soldiers protesting in shifts, not far from the President's office, Casa Rosada (out of shot to the left). These non-combatants, defending Argentina's coast and airbases during the 1982 Falklands War, are not counted as War Veterans. They will only leave on receipt of veteran status and back pay benefits. Their camp, with electricity, beds, kitchen and dining mess, is surrounded by protest banners and souvenir stands. The white Cabildo, now a museum, is one of the few colonial buildings surviving the Plaza's 19th century redevelopment.
