X-ray crystallography. A crystal is placed on the end of the pin, with a stream of cool air coming in from the right. An X-ray beam arrives from the silver pipe in the centre of the picture, and the camera (black) images the crystal. Crystallography is used to determine the three-dimensional molecular structure of a material. The diffraction pattern produced as X-rays pass through a crystal reveal its structure.
