Solar powered Light Guards or short range navigation light on Cairn na Burgh Mor in the Treshnish Isles, Inner Hebrides of Scotland

At the request of the Hebridean Trust, GUARD undertook an archaeological evaluation of a small site at the northern end of the Cairn na Burgh Mor to confirm its suitability for a minor “lighthouse”, or short range navigation light. This light, powered by the sun would helps protect the Treshnish colonies against the increased risk of marine oil pollution from potential groundings as shipping in the area continues to grow, primarily from increased leisure and commercial traffic. Fortunately no archaeological features were found in the footprint of the light, which is now in position and operational thanks to the Northern Lighthouse Board.
