A late 19th Century illustration of the marriage of Xerxes I (518-465 BC), commonly known as Xerxes the Great, and fourth King of Kings of the Achaemenid Empire to Esther. Xerxes was the son and successor of Darius the Great and ruled from 486 BC until his assassination in 465 BC. During a banquet Xerxes' queen, Vashti, disobeys his orders and is removed from her position. Xerxes then makes arrangements to choose a new queen from a selection of beautiful young women, one, a Jewish orphan named Esther, finds favour and is crowned his new queen, but does not reveal her Jewish heritage.
