Van Mons, * Culture des ArbresFruitiers, states that the Beurre Ranee is the best ofall late Pears, a character which, under favourable cir-cumsfances, it has maintained in this country. Butaccording to soil, situation, and climate, its qualityvaries exceedingly. From a standard it is generally de-licious ; whilst in the same garden, although produced oflarger size, yet the flavour is sometimes insipid wheagrown against an east or west aspect. When this is foundto be the case, room should be made for the reception ofsome trees on a south aspect, if possible, for there is notany known Pear so handsome, ricb, and lasting as thisvariety wheu obtained in Q>-een, somewJiat rough, vnthdark-brown russet.
