An old engraving of an ‘Anderson’ tubular (tubulous or sectional pipe) boiler made by Mast, Foos and Company of Springfield, Ohio, USA in It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This steam boiler had small tubes containing water and surrounded by flame and hot gases. The fire-tube boiler, offered a far greater heating surface area for the same overall boiler volume. The general construction is as a tank of water penetrated by tubes that carry the hot flue gases from the fire.

Already a successful businessman, in just a few years, the Springfield firm of Thomas and Mast became famous across the nation. The original proprietors were Mast and John Thomas, a young lawyer. In 1875 the Mast, Foos & Company was formed and a factory was built. It was one of the most modern, well-designed factories in the USA producing tubular and portable boilers and wind engines. The company produced a 400-horsepower boiler to make steam at the Industrial Exposition, Philadelphia in 1876. The company later manufactured Buckeye lawn mowers, iron turbine wind machines and force pumps.
