Marine Corps Brig. Gen. William Bowers, Marine Corps Installations Pacific commanding general, meets with Shigeru Sugawara, the mayor of Kesennuma, at Kesennuma, Japan, March 11, 2021. The meeting discussed the preparations of the 10 year anniversary ceremony of the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster in Kesennuma. The response, Operation Tomodachi, would become the largest bilateral operation, involving nearly 25,000 service members that assisted with aid efforts across the affected areas of Japan.
