Modern house construction in Stevenage New Town, Hertfordshire, England, UK in 1963. Here, on the fronts of a terrace of houses, insulation (thin by modern standards) is held in place by timber battening prior to a hung-tile finishing layer being applied – see Alamy 2HJ0WDC for workers applying the tiling. Stevenage lies about 30 miles (50 km) north of London. In 1946 Stevenage was designated the United Kingdom's first New Town under the New Towns Act. This image is from an old amateur colour transparency – a vintage 1960s photograph.

Stevenage lies about 30 miles (50 km) north of London. In 1946 Stevenage was designated the United Kingdom's first New Town under the New Towns Act. The plan was not popular with local people but despite the opposition, the plan went ahead. Gordon Stephenson was the planner, Peter Shepheard the architect, and Eric Claxton the engineer. The town was planned with six neighbourhoods. The first two of these to be occupied were the Stoney Hall and Monks Wood 'Estates' in 1951. Next to be built were the neighbourhoods of Bedwell in 1952. Then came Broadwater and Shephall (1953), Chells in the 1960s. The pedestrianised town centre was the first purpose-built traffic-free shopping zone in Britain, taking its inspiration from the Lijnbaan in Rotterdam. This image is from an old amateur colour transparency. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
