Rio de Janeiro, satellite image. North is at top, urban areas are shown as pink. Rio de Janeiro is the old capital of Brazil, being usurped by Brasilia in 1960. With the metropolitan area population standing at around 13 million (as of 2005), it is Brazil's second largest city - after Sao Paulo. It lies on the Atlantic coast and has an area of around 1250 square kilometres. It is located 400 kilometres northeast of Sao Paulo.
