The Blue Lake at St Bathans in Central Otago, New Zealand. The lake was formed by miners sluicing through rock to get at the gold. They completely removed the 120 meter high Kildare Hill and eventually created a hole 168 metres deep. From the 1880s the miners used htdraulic lift technology to remove the water and gravels to extract the was halted in 1934 as the pit was getting too close to town and the hole filled with water. The surrounding minerals give the lake its blue colour. Some mining relics can be seen around the lake. Eventaully erosion took its toll and some of St Bathans slipped down the hillside and was abandoned.
