The Parish Church of St. Kentigern, Great Crosthwaite, Lake District, Cumbria, England, UK.

St. Kentigern (known as St. Mungo in Scotland) is believed to have settled in this area in 533AD having been driven out of Glasgow. The name Crosthwaite means a cross in a clearing ("thwaite" is a Saxon word meaning a clearing in a forest) and it may relate to the saint's appearance in the area. The present form of the church dates from 1523 but earlier features date from 1180. It was restored by the architect Gilbert Scott in 1844. The clock in the tower dates from 1720 but, unusually, only has an hour hand. The poet Robert Southey is buried in the churchyard.
