The ac-count they gave of the disaster was,that the ship was lost on the Barrier Reef of New 14 THE LOSS OF THE CHARLES EATON. Soon after striking, she bilged, lost her rudder, andcarried away her masts, the sea making a clear breachover her. One of the quarter-boats was lowered, intowhich were thrown sails, provisions, &c. The third mate,carpenter, and five seamen, entered her, pushed off, andsoon lost sight of the ship. They stated that when theyleft her, the crew and passengers were all alive on theforecastle. The first land they made was Timor Laut,where they fell into the hands of the natives; but theywere generally well treated, and after remaining on theisland thirteen months, they persuaded the natives to letthem take passage in a return proa to Amboyna, prom-ising to send them back presents of muskets, ammunition,&c. They arrived here in October, and reached Bataviain* December.
