The letters of the inscription arePhoenician, yet there is not in that old language a single sign (Ch doing duty for a letter; but if we turn to the ancient Hebrew alphabet, as given byGesenius in his Monumenta Phoenicia, we find that o stands for )), and that another form of the same Eig. 22. letter is Q , which is sometimes used, though not atypical form of the same letter, in the Phoenician.(J is its most common form in the Carthaginianinscriptions. Assuming, then, that the lozengerepresents the P, the inscription reads Wi3^, Inbrba,which, taking the Hebrew for our guide, we read atthe high place (Nob) of the four, V^9 rabba, beingequivalent to Vlitf or V^V, arba or erba.
