The 38th (Welsh) Division Memorial Red Dragon Memorial on the Somme Battlefield France. The statue looks towards Mametz Wood. During the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, the Welsh soldiers attacked these woods for 5 days and suffered huge losses, with over 4,000 dead and wounded. The valley to the west (image taken looking south) is called the Death Valley. The Welsh inscription means, 'Let us respect their endeavours. Let our memories live on.' It was unveiled on 11th July 1987 after fund raising efforts of the Cardiff Western Front Association led by Harry Evans. Although not an official memorial or emblem it is now the focus of Welsh Rememberance on the Western Front. 'The exhuberant, winged, red dragon spits fire and grasps the enemy's barbed wire in its powerful claws.' (Quote: Major & Mrs Holt's Guide to the Somme)
