Reefnet salmon fishing is an old Indian method for capturing salmon as they swim through the San Juan Islands off Lummi Island.

In the Puget sound area off Lummi Island, Washington an old indian method for fishing for salmon is still practiced today called Reefnetting. Reefnetting consists of two stationary boats with an artificial reef made of rope and "plastic" grass to simulate a natural reef. The fishermen stand in towers with polarized sunglasses to spot the fish. In between the boats a net is strung and when the fish enter the net it is hauled up and the fish are put in a live holding area on the boat. Reefnetting is only done in this one area of the world. This is a detail shot of the gear that hauls up the net. A block and tackle mechanism activated by electric winches.
