Besides the mass movement, one sees, from time totime, changes in the shape of the haustral sections of the largeintestine, especially in the distal colon. It is not at all amarked movement and has probably no connection with theprogress of food along the intestine. Presumably it is con-nected with digestion and acts by churning. Rieder described large pendulum movements whichappear to be much the same as the smaller haustral churning. Fig. 76.
