They may have had practically nochoice in the matter, and yet it must nowseem as if they had begun at the wrongend. It owes somethingof its reputation in this respect to theantiquity of its origin, but that, of itself,would have been insufficient to give it aforemost place. It has been fortunate inhaving the adherence and support of avery large and influential body of members,and it has been particularly fortunate inits clergy. From the fact of having hadthree Bishops at different times in its in-cumbency, it came to be known as theBishops Church, and it lias also beenfrequently spoken of in an informal andunofficial manner as the pro-Cathedral ofthe Diocese.
