This stream is navigablefor barges as far as Bodiam, a distance of fifteen miles,and is the thorouglifare of much of the commerce con-nected with the port of Rye. lhe Brede, which risesnear Battle, is navigable for barges as far as BredeBridge, about 7 miles from Rye ; while the Tillingham—formerly known by the name of the Beck, whence thevillage of Beckley, where it has its source, derives itsname—is a small stream only navigable at particulartimes, bv small barges.
