Hunter College was founded as a women's teaching college in 1869 as the Female Normal and High School, later the Normal College of the City of New York. It became Hunter College in 1914. By the 1920s, its Upper East Side campus was in need of Bronx Campus was designed by Thompson, Holmes & Converse in the Collegiate Gothic style and built in Jerome Park in 1930–34. The campus became a training ground for women in the military during World War II. In 1946, the campus hosted the United Nations for six months. They met in the Gymnasium. The college became coeducational in 1964. In 1968, it was made a separate college within the CUNY system, now called Lehman College.
