The place has aptly been described as " a huge open book, in which may be read at all times the qualities of any particular kind of plant, in which all faults as well as merits and beauties are written by na- ture's inflexible ; The soil of Fordhook cannot be made to deceive, and it is the Imth Mr. Burpee desires to know. Here the " trial " grounds are cultivated. All the sam- ples quoted in the table below have been noted in their development and recorded in the books at the farm, the vegetable and flower seeds combined making the enor- mous total of 5309 samples It cost thou- sands of dollars to establish Fordhook. And now some- body will ask, "Why was this large sum of money expended upon Fordhook when it could have been used in advertising and purchasing stock ?" Simply because Mr. Burpee was not content to send out to his patrons a single article he could not vouch for. He wanted to see specimens of all his seeds growing under his own critical eye before sending them to the growers who raise his supply. The results of his observations are made known in his catalogues, and what is printed there may be relied upon as absolutely true. He also tests in Fordhook's soil the leading varieties of seeds advertised by other houses, in order tliat comparisons may be made.
