Bog moss (Sphagnum sp.) overhead view. Moss is a non-vascular plant. Sphagnum mosses grow in moist places, such as bogs and ponds, most particularly in acid conditions. When the lower portion of the plant dies, the acid conditions prevent decay and the dead tissue gradually compacts to form peat. Photographed in September, in Glen Affric, in the Highland region of Scotland.
