Royal Enclosure castle and other historical monuments Gondar, Ethiopia. Gondar, at the foot of the Simien Mountains, was founded by Fasilidas in the s. It was an important political, administrative, commercial, religious and cultural center for more than 250 years. Its decadence, product of intrigues and dynastic fights, was aggravated when Tewodoros II transferred the seat of the imperial government to Debre Tabor, to 100 km to the southeast.
