In landscape with field of pineapples, palm trees & pine trees, woman on L (=Empress?), gestures with fan as 2 workers gather pineapples in wicker baskets in foreground; man picks pineapple as maid kneels & holds fan in center; harvesters near buildings carry baskets in background (L), six-storied pagoda in distance (BRD) picture-frame border with stylized acanthus leaves Initially, famous commissions of this series took place with, notably, 1 set ordered by the duc du Maine & another by his brother the comte de Toulouse; subsequent anonymous commissions followed well into the 18th century. This set was probably one of these later commissions.
