Third County Courthouse, built in 1837 in Historic Richmondtown, Staten Island, New York
This was the primary courthouse for Richmond County from 1837 until 1919, when a new courthouse was built in St. George. Land for the courthouse was given by Henry I. Seaman, who had purchased 90 acres to the east of Richmondtown village for development. The Greek Revival building housed a courtroom, a jail, and the offices of the county clerk, surrogate and others. When the county seat was relocated to St. George, the courthouse was abandoned from 1919 until 1932. At that time, the City leased space to various service organizations. In 1948, the Staten Island Historical Society took possession of the structure. It is an official New York City landmark.
