This is one of the smallest streets in the York city centre. It is 35 metres long and was once the location of the city s pillory, hence the name. Pillory meaning whipping post for punishment and public older maps the street was called Whitnourwhatnourgate Whit nour what nour meaning neither one thing, nor the other.
