After Roman troops managed to breach the walls of Carthage, they sacked the city and burned Carthage to the ground in 146

Between 264 and 146 , Rome fought Carthage in what are known as the Punic Wars. Rome won each of the three wars. It was during the Second Punic War that Hannibal led the Carthaginian troops. During the Third Punic War (149-146 ), the Romans lay siege to Carthage. The Roman leader in this war was Scipio Aemilianus. After the Roman troops managed to breach the walls of Carthage, they sacked the city and burned Carthage to the ground in 146 In this illustration the Romans oversee the burning. In the 19th century the detail that the Romans plowed the area with salt so the nothing could again rise from the area was added—and is reflected in this illustration as well.
