Considering this un- derstanding of Elegmops, it is possible to assume that generally the Perciform fishes have only one lateral Une in the body sides, commonly reaching the caudal fin. If Notothenia has two lines, it can the loss of the second be the current situation of a derived newer genus and the acquisition of a third Une also be re- garded as a derivation from the two-lined form. Bol. Soc. Biol. Concepción, Chile. Tomo 60, 1989 Likewise, only one species of No- tothenia —N. trigramma— has three la- teral lines and we can suppose another new Une is arising from that genus. Pos- sibly other cióse relatives formerly po- orly studied also have three lateral Unes. Other fishes —genus Dissostichus— pre- sent a different shape with one short and two very long lateral Unes on each side. As a practical standard for recognizing fishes in the field, those characteristics could be useful (Fig. 5).. Fig. 5.
