Paris Garage, Eug̬ne Atget, 1922
Entitled: "Cour, 7 rue de Valence" photographed by Eug̬ne Atget, 1922. The subject of this photograph is an early automobile garage occupying a timeworn courtyard near the intersection of rue Mouffetard and rue Monge in the fifth arrondissement. Although Atget's interest was primarily in the texture of old Paris, not the city's new promenades and modern monuments, he did make a few studies of automobiles, signs of modern times, beginning in 1922. Beside a pair of motorcycles rests an early-model Renault touring car, probably dating from 1908. It, too, may be a relic: its four-cylinder engine lies beside it.
