The side stakes or slats are hinged at the top and fastenedtogether to form a separate door for each compartment andare held by locking bars at the bottom which can be operatedfrom the end of the car. The cars are usually divided intotwo or three compartments. Both sides may be hinged, butin most cases this is done on one side only, the other sidehaving- the stakes riveted on.
