An engineer inspects a section of newly excavated Jubilee Line tunnel close to Westminster and prior to the installation of the rail tracks and permanent fixed equipment. The Jubilee Line Extension was one of the United Kingdom's biggest construction projects and is the largest addition to the London Underground network in more than 25 years. Work started on the £ billion project to extend the Jubilee Line in 1993, the extension runs from Green Park to Stratford and opened in three phases during 1999. The 10-mile-long extension created a direct link between London's West End and the outer reaches of the East End and provided a stimulus to the redevelopment of areas poorly served by public transportation. The Jubilee line covers ( miles) and serves 27 stations between Stanmore and Stratford.
